Bên kia sông Đuống . Bài thơ của thi sĩ Hoàng Cầm
Em ơi! Buồn làm chi
Anh đưa em về sông Đuống
Sông xưa cát trắng phẳng lì
Sông Đuống trôi đi
Một dòng lấp lánh
Nằm nghiêng nghiêng trong kháng chiến trường kỳ
Xanh xanh bãi mía bờ dâu
Ngô khoai biêng biếc
Đứng bên này sông sao nhớ tiếc
Sao xót xa như rụng bàn tay
Bên kia sông Đuống
Quê hương ta lúa nếp thơm nồng
Tranh Đông Hồ gà lợn nét tươi trong
Màu dân tộc sáng bừng trên giấy điệp
Quê hương ta từ ngày khủng khiếp
Giặc kéo lên ngùn ngụt lửa hung tàn
Ruộng ta khô
Nhà ta cháy
Chó dại một đàn
Lưỡi dài lê sắc máu
Kiệt cùng ngõ thẳm bờ hoang
Mẹ con đàn lợn âm dương
Chia lìa trăm ngả
Đám cưới chuột đang tưng bừng rộn rã
Bây giờ tan tác về đâu?
Ai về bên kia sông Đuống
Cho ta gửi tấm the đen

English Version
The Other Side of the Đuống River. A poem of Hoàng Cầm
Oh, my dear, don’t be so sad
I will go with you to the Đuống River
Our old river with white flat bed of sand
The River flowing brightly
along with our unending resistance against the French
Do you see the field of sugarcane and strawberry?
and the green leaves of corns and tomatoes.
Looking from this side of the River
I regret so much not to be there
I feel a serious pain as my hand is cut
At the other side of the River
It’s our native village with the glutinous rice
and various illustrations of roasters and pigs from Đông Hồ village
on special color and special paper of our people
Since the horible days happened in our country
the invaders came with force and fire
Our rice fields dried up
Our houses are burned
Like mad dog
with bayonnet
they are hunting for victims
Mother Pig lost her children
The wedding of the Mouse Family is scattered
Whoever go the other side of the Đuống River
please help me to bring a piece of black silk
as the country is still in peace
in the Thiên Thai mountain
in the But Thap pagoda
right at the center of LanTai district.
The black silk ia a gift to whoever you see
may be a girl with rosy lips
or a white hair old man,
a boy in brown trouser
listening the bell of a buddhist temple
At the other side of the River
An old Mother lady
Going to the market
trying to sell some cheap items
such as dried areca nuts and rose papers
Suddenly appeared some blue eyes demons
kicking the old lady with their boots
mumbling and stealing
The market is disbanded
some trace of blood is visible somewhere in this winter afternoon
The white hair old lady cannot make any money
She went home hungry
The Đuống River is dark at nigh fall
“Who are you, my son?
the door is slighly open
please come in, it’s safe inside”
The deemed light shows the face of an old mother
talking to her so-called Son
about unknown, un-predictable stories
The Đuống River is very dark at Night
“I am sharpening my pick ax
I am going to bend my sickle
I have my stick already sharp”
The Đuống River is extremely dark ai night
The guerila troups are coming back by crossing the River
My son, you are going to attack.
The ennemies are trembling in the dark
Swords flashed at night
Pointed sticks appeared at the end the village
The enemies cannot sleep
nowhere to go
insane they become
Grandma is lulling her grandson to sleep
” Your dad was killed in a battle long time ago
the more you grown up, the deeper is your resentment
Some woman is working in the rice field
it’s cold and drizzling
“You have my soiled my body
my rancour will last forever
O my dear, please stop singing, I am suffering
Mama, please stop crying, I am so sad
Everybody pfease be calm: I am going to kill the invaders
Their blood will be used to wash my resentement
I will take their Guns and Rifles
Every night will become a festival
I will feel so happy
The Sun is rising
The Horizon is brightening
The River is flowing
drifting all enemie posts to the ocean
along with so much tears and dark times
and lives
One day when I cross the River to the other side
I will surely find you my love
I see you with a white vietnamese bra
and a rose bell around your body
You are enjoying the National Festival.
smilling with all your heart as in Spring time
.
